Peace Family one of the joys of life is to be there for family and friends to help them celebrate the milestones. For me, sometimes just being there at all is enough! A friendship that started between two 6 year old girls has lasted a lifetime and it’s one of the things I treasure. I met Glynna when we were in Girl Scout Brownies and she encouraged me when I was afraid of the dark. It helped me so much. We stayed in touch over the years and I was able to be there for her when she went through a rough patch in life. We have laughed, cried, hugged, and one night when she visited me in Nashville we ended up on the roof of Reba McEntire’s building, Starstruck Entertainment, on Music Row…just taking in the Nashville skyline.
But when I was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 she dropped everything and was there for me. Even sitting with my mother in the waiting room while I was in surgery. I remember at the time thinking, “Why am I going to go through all this? I mean, I don’t have any children and I’m not married. This chemo and radiation thing is going to be pure hell.” Then I thought of all the future times I would miss. I wanted to see my only niece get married some day. I wanted to see Glynna get married again one day too. And my mom…well I don’t think she would survive if something happened to me. I had to fight. And fight I did!
Last weekend I got to celebrate one of those things I was fighting for: Glynna, after waiting 18 years, got married. They had a reception at a great Lebanese restaurant in Houston and I got to be there. It was such a happy time. Everyone laughing and joking and hugging and I told Glynna, “I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. Being here with you is one reason I fought through treatment.” So here we are all these years later, a lifetime really, at her wedding reception.
God is so faithful. I want to encourage you not to miss a chance to celebrate your friends and family and mark every milestone you can. Make great memories and love people well. In the changing times we live in it will be something that gives you strength and encouragement. I treasure life and if you are reading this you’re alive too. Make today count and celebrate those around you!
