Peace family, are you getting your fulfillment from Christ, or are you believing the messages around us? What is your idea of success?
It’s interesting that no matter our walk, we can still get caught up in feeling worthless. I spent this last weekend with a friend who greatly impresses me. In fact, I’m so impressed by her, that there have been a few times in the past that I felt badly about my comparative lack of success. She’s my same age, but she’s finished medical school and is a successful obstetrician. She has a great husband, an adorable baby, and a lovely home in a good neighborhood near her parents.
This weekend, we got to talking about feelings of inadequacy, and she opened up about a recent revelation that despite all of the big “boxes” being checked off, she had not been feeling totally fulfilled or happy. I know a lot of people (myself included) with fewer “boxes” checked off, who have felt this way as well. Here was evidence that even people who seem to have it all together by the world’s standards, can still struggle with feeling empty. My sweet friend’s honesty and vulnerability was such a powerful reminder to find my value and identity in Christ.
Peace family, no matter how successful we are by the world’s standards, we will always feel inadequate. No matter how accomplished or unaccomplished we personally feel, we will never be fully satisfied, except through God. We can know this logically, but still believe on some level that having these things will make us fulfilled and satisfied. It’s so easy to feel like “having it all” will give us comfort and ease, but it’s only God who can complete our lives.
Peace family, what areas in your life do you feel unfulfilled? What does success look like to you? Is it the same as what God considers success?
What are some ways that you can hand your unfulfilled areas over to God today? Let’s you and me both give our lives over to God on a deeper level today. Let’s acknowledge to him the places where we feel disappointed, and trust that He is good. Let’s seek deeper friendship with him. Let’s trust him with our hearts and the things that we wish could fulfill us. Let’s put him back onto the throne, as the only One who can truly satisfy the longings of our hearts, and trust that He is good.
