As summer approaches watermelon season is almost here! Watermelon is one of my favorite summertime fruits and I found an expert, Alfonso Garcia, to give me the secrets to finding the best, sweetest watermelons. Of course I have to pass it on to our Peace Family! I know thumping them is a usual but here’s more detail.
- Make sure it has a prominent yellow spot. 聽This is where it sat on the ground ripening. No spot equals premature picking before it was fully ripe.
- Look for ‘webbing’. This is the brown, coarse web-looking material. It’s caused when bees pollinate the flower and scar the membranes that later form the fruit. The more pollination equals more webbing which equals sweeter fruit.
- Look for black, hard globs seeping out. This is sugar not insects or rotting. Guaranteed sweet!
