While you’re busy with your life and family this summer, remember to touch base with your friends, Peace Family. They are the key sometimes to help you through a rough spot or challenge. I can’t tell you how many times I have had a situation that effected my family or job and just sharing it with a friend and knowing they were praying about it made all the difference in the world. A trusted friend is more valuable than gold.
Of course our first place to turn should always be the Bible and pouring our heart out to God through prayer. And there is no friend closer than Jesus. He has experienced pain, disappointment and wrestled with man’s humanity and weakness just like we do.
But sometimes the comfort of a trusted friend is priceless. Especially if they are tried and true. I have a best friend since I was 14 and trust her with my life. She would give me a kidney if I needed one (so she says…) She became a nurse and during my cancer surgery and treatment was my advocate. She also held my hand when I was scared and was being strong for my family. With her I could let down.
I have a friend I met while doing radio in Southern California in the 80s and we have been fast friends for over 30 years now. I have radio friends that are good under pressure that I’ve had running jokes with for years. I am still friends with the man who mowed my grass when I owned a home in Nashville and I can go to him with any questions I have about those things. I even have a friend I met in the first grade when we were in Girl Scout Brownies. Her father was a pastor and she was strong for me when my mom went through one of her divorces. Decades later, this friend’s son took his own life and I was able to be there for her when she thought she would not live through it.
I have a friend that, when we met, we didn’t really get along. We slowly became friends and after several years I knew she would be a lifelong friend. She was a bridesmaid in my wedding. That was years ago and I would do anything for her. She is a faithful friend and has an amazing prayer chain of ladies that she’s had pray for me many times. I have several guy friends that began as a possible date but soon went into the friend zone and have become dear friends. One in particular stayed such a good friend that when he got married and decided to buy his first home, he bought mine! We settled on a fair price, as neither was trying to rip off the other. We used the same realtor in the sale and she told us, “This is the best experience I’ve ever had representing both people. You both respect each other and want to do the right thing.” Friends.
So while your family is your priority and always should be, friends can make the difference between being miserable and grasping understanding and hope. My prayer for you today is that you will tend to the garden of friends that God has placed in your life. You will harvest a wealth.
