Peace family, Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
As someone with Scotch-Irish heritage, this day is much more meaningful to me than how it is commonly celebrated. If you aren’t familiar with the story, Saint Patrick was not actually Irish. When he was young, he was captured and enslaved for years in Ireland, until one day he got the opportunity to escape on a ship. He grew up and became a leader in the church, and one night, dreamed that the Irish people were begging him to come back and share the gospel with them. He had a choice to make.
I don’t know about you, but I think I would have a really hard time forgiving the people who had enslaved me, much less return to them and choose to benefit them. But that is exactly what Patrick did! He felt like my ancestors were valuable enough to love, and taught them what true freedom was, despite the ways that they had taken away his own personal freedom.
Peace family, when I think of St. Patrick, I think of a courageous man who obeyed God’s directive to share the message of God’s love and redemption! It inspires me to forgive others better, and it is a beautiful life story of how God can use the greatest tragedies of our lives for the greatest good, and bring healing both to us and to others.
Peace family, here’s hoping your Saint Patrick’s Day is beautiful and blessed.
