Peace family, I’ve been fostering some teacup chihuahuas, and it has been a great reminder that working towards healing is worth it, even though it’s hard.
These dogs came from a hoarding situation (the house had a total of 49 dogs, mainly chihuahuas) and they have several issues because of it. They are very cute and affectionate, but they are fearful, they have some medical issues, they send mixed signals (growling and wagging tail at the same time), they have eating or food dominance issues, and for a good long while, they were going potty all over my floor! In fact, we had to start crating them temporarily until we take them outside to potty, to try to break that habit of free-range bathrooming.
Has it been a frustrating process sometimes? Yes. But is their healing and re-training worth it? Absolutely, yes! Though leashes and the new experience of going outside is frightening to them right now, will it enrich and better their lives, for the rest of their lives? Definitely!
Peace family, healing is often confusing and painful. We often have to learn new ways of doing things, and we don’t always like them. We don’t like going to the counselor and sharing the pain in our hearts. We don’t enjoy going to the dentist to get cavities filled or crowns put on. We don’t like going to the physical therapist after an injury, or the doctor when we need surgery, or the gym when we need to lose weight. We don’t even like walking to the altar at the front of the church when we’re invited to go up there for prayer. However, all of these things are worth it. You are worth it!
Our God is a God of redemption and a God of healing. If you know that something is good, and that a greater purpose is being achieved, it doesn’t necessarily make the pain go away, but it can encourage us to remember that our pain is not without a purpose. God can use even the most painful, devastating experiences to do beautiful things in your life, but you do have to be willing to let him heal you. In Joel 2:25, God is shown as a God who restores what the locusts have eaten. In Psalm 30:11, he is a described as a God who turns mourning into dancing, removing our grief and dressing us with joy. In Isaiah 61:3, He is described as a God who gives us beauty in exchange for our ashes. What powerful descriptions!
If you are in a painful season and need healing, don’t give up. Especially when we come from a situation that is in some ways similar to what these chihuahuas have gone through, we can feel like we’ll be broken forever. Just trust God and keep trying! God is with you!
