Peace family, do you know your neighbors? If not, I want to encourage you to make an effort this week, or at least this month, to have them over for coffee or dinner and just get to know them! You never know how you might bless them, or how they might turn out to bless you.
This last week, I really appreciated my neighborhood community. I had a friend coming to stay with me from out of town, and my guest bedroom looked horrible! One of my neighbors was over for tea, and when I talked to her about it, she ended up letting me borrow art off of her own wall so that the bedroom would be beautiful and restful for my friend. Then, when I was making a big meal for my friend, I did not have enough potatoes to finish the dish I had already started to make, and I needed to get it into the oven as soon as possible. This time, a different neighbor came through by giving me his last potato! It turned out to be exactly how much I needed.
In the grand scheme of things, these were just simple kindnesses, but they really ministered to my heart, and reinforced the feeling that God provides for me, even in small things. Look around you, Peace family. Is there someone nearby who could use a friend? Is there someone, young or old, who lives alone and might really value a few minutes of your day and your listening ear? Or maybe there’s a mom who’d be willing to team up with you to take care of some least favorite housework? Or a Dad who’d enjoy doing yard work together? The possibilities are endless, and they are beautiful.
I know it can be scary, vulnerable, and sometimes feel unfruitful, to take the time to get to know your neighbors, but you never know what precious people you might have only a few doors away. I know life isn’t perfect, but it just feels better when you know and are friendly with those around you, and you know that you have each other’s back. Anyway, just a few thoughts from your friendly, neighborhood Kat.
