Peace family, has anyone reminded you lately that you are a new creation in Christ?
One of my favorite things about God, is his ability to redeem lives and transform brokenness into beauty. This little hula girl is a new addition to my studio work area, and she reminds me of that every day!
A while back, I was jogging through my neighborhood, when I saw an arm sticking out of my neighbor’s garbage. Curious, I went closer, and looked in to find what turned out to be a hula girl. Her hair was wild and unkempt, and she was mostly naked but with a few bits of a paper skirt still clinging to her with glue. She looked like a little tramp, and I thought, “I wonder where you came from?” but I felt pity for this little doll, and ended up fishing her out of the garbage bin and taking her home.
She was dirty, so I scrubbed her with soap and a toothbrush, and worked the knots out of her hair with a doll hair brush. I peeled off the glue and scrubbed hard on a spot that looked like someone had written on her with a marker, until she was clean. Finally, I pulled out my sewing scraps, chose some fabric that I felt would delight a hula girl, and sewed her a little dress! To finish, I pulled her curly hair back in a small band, and tied a little string of plastic pearls into it. Every time I look at her, and think about her transformation, it makes me smile!
Peace family, God does that with us, too. He lifts us up out of the trash and cleans us. He wipes away what other people have written on us, and he gives us a fresh, new identity. He clothes us in righteousness, and makes us more than we ever thought we could be. Remember, II Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” If you feel like that little doll today, be encouraged! God is working in your life, even right now, and you make him smile even more than I could ever smile for that little hula doll!
