Peace family, have you ever felt like something in your life was destroyed beyond repair? Has it ever seemed like something has gone so wrong, that even God can’t or won’t fix it? Did you know that with God, we can always have hope?
Several months ago, when the weather changed from so wet to so hot and dry, I was heartbroken to find that only a few days of baking in the sun had seemingly killed my curry plant. This plant is particularly special to me, and would be very difficult to replace, because it was grown from the baby of a friend’s plant (my friend is from India, and I don’t know where she got her plant), and I’ve never seen any other curry plants except for hers and mine. All of the leaves were dead, shriveled, and crunchy, and I was sure that nothing much could be done to save it. Even so, I took the plant into my solarium and watered it thoroughly. I cut off the bad branches, hoping that the plant would be able to focus on its roots and get some strength back, and I put a plastic bag over the top of it, with several holes poked in it, to keep humidity around the plant.
For several months, I have continued to water it, even though it seemed to make no difference, and today, when I went out to the solarium to tend to some orchids, I was amazed and delighted to see that my curry plant has grown new, tender branches and leaves! Even though I couldn’t see any life or change for many months, the plant was still hanging on, growing underneath the ground and gathering what it needed in order to make a come back.
Peace family, isn’t it interesting how much of our lives are like that? Even when our situations look hopeless and dead to us, God is moving, he is bringing life, and he is causing us to grow. We can trust in him, that He is working things according to his purposes and goodness. Peace family, if you are hurting today with damage that seems beyond repair, I’d like to encourage you to remember my curry plant, keep praying, trust God, and don’t give up. When we don’t see any results for a long time, it can be easy to grow discouraged, but God is doing something good, even if, with our limited perspective, it doesn’t seem very good. Some day, we will understand, but in the meantime, we can keep trusting and obeying him! He is a God of resurrection and new life, and He has power, even over our most hopeless situations.
