Have you ever noticed that when you’re in a good diner or restaurant your coffee cup never gets below half empty? The waitstaff is aware of your needs and make sure you always have more hot coffee in your cup. Or in Texas it’s your iced tea glass. Just another reason to love America…free refills! That is something they don’t do in Europe or other parts of the world.
It made me think about our spiritual cup and how we go about refilling it as Christians. Sometimes when we feel low on inspiration we’ll find external things to fill it up. It might be shopping or sports or volunteering and helping others. And those things can be restorative in their own ways. But there is something about sitting still long enough for God to refill your cup. Whether it’s reading His Word, spending time in prayer or just being silent and letting God speak life to your soul.
We may not have everything we want materially in this world but we can be rich in the fullness of God. Our cup can be so full of gratitude and praise that it overflows. There is a Southern Gospel song that says, “I’m drinking from my saucer, ’cause my cup has overflowed.”
As a matter of fact, it was written by John Paul Moore and here are the lyrics:
I never made a fortune and it’s probably too late now
But I don’t worry about that much, I’m happy anyhow
And as I go along life’s journey, I’m reaping better than I sowed
I’m drinking from my saucer, cause my cup has overflowed.
I ain’t got a lot of riches, and sometimes the goings tough
but I’ve got kids who love me and that makes me rich enough
I just thank God for his blessings and the mercies he’s bestowed.
I’m drinking from my saucer, cause my cup has overflowed.
I remember times when things went wrong, and my faith got a little thin
but then all at once the dark clouds broke, and the sun peeked through again
so Lord help me not to gripe about the tough rows I hoed
I’m drinking from my saucer, cause my cup has overflowed.
And if God gives me strength and courage, when the way grows steep and rough
I’ll not ask for another blessing, I’m already blessed enough
And may I never be too busy to help another bear his load
I’ll keep drinking from my saucer, cause my cup has overflowed.
So today, Peace Family, may you be drinking from your saucer because the blessings in your cup have overflowed! Let the Lord use you to fill someone else’s cup up today!
