Peace family, for some reason, I’ve had birthdays and cakes on my mind this week. I was already planning to bake a cake for a non-birthday party this weekend, but for some reason, as a friend of mine has been working through some particularly difficult experiences, my thoughts have gravitated towards her spiritual “birthday,” when she decided to give her life to Christ. It’s made me think back to my own spiritual “birthday” as well, and all of the things that God has brought me through since then!
Peace family, in the day to day business, dreariness, and sometimes failures and temptations of life, it can be so easy to forget all of the ways that God has shown his faithfulness to us. When I was going through a few years’ worth of my journals last night, trying to remember exactly when it was that my friend gave her life to Jesus, it was so encouraging to see different verses, encouraging words, prayer requests, and experiences where God met me in some pretty deep places of need and heartache.
When was the last time that you thought back and remembered God’s presence in your life? Have you celebrated the miracles that he has performed, or have other worries crowded out your memories of God’s provision and times of closeness in your life? What personal “holidays” and memorandums have you set up, to remind you of all that he has done, and his enduring faithfulness? I am hoping to bake a cake for my friend this year, to celebrate her “birthday,” but there are many ways that you can personally celebrate God’s relationship with you, even if your celebration is private.
If you have time this weekend, look back and remember all that God has done! It gives me so much more faith to trust God with what he is going to do with my life, and reinforces those positive and deep memories that I have shared with him, when I remember all that he has already done and taught me. If your first thought is that you don’t have any memories like that, just give yourself some time! God does so much for us, even when we don’t always recognize it.
