Peace family, have you ever noticed how foolishness often masquerades as wisdom?
A friend and I are reading through the book of Proverbs, and in today’s chapter, Chapter 9, I was struck in a fresh way by how often choices that are foolish can look wise. (Side note: if you are having trouble reading the Bible on a daily basis and don’t know where to start, why not join us? There are 31 chapters in Proverbs, so we are just reading whichever chapter number matches that day.)
In the first part, Wisdom (personified) invites everyone who is simple or lacking in sense to come eat and drink at her house, inviting them to leave their foolish ways and live. Meanwhile, Folly gives almost the exact same invitation as Wisdom, but dining at her table leads to death.
Peace family, how many times do we find ourselves in a bad situation because we thought we were wiser than a parent, or a teacher, or God, and decided to do things our own way? I have definitely failed, and it takes a lot of humility to seek wisdom from others, but it is worth it. Even more so, we can always depend on God as the wisest of all. When we believe God, put him first, and live by his principles, things just seem to work out much better!
Proverbs 9:10-12 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.”
Who doesn’t want to be rewarded? Let’s try to submit to God and His wisdom, instead of our own, today!
